“If in the Budget, the chancellor presents a more credible plan for reducing the unsustainable deficit, it will be easier for the MPC to persevere with lower interest rates, making a business-led recovery possible,” he claims.

Earlier this month, the BCC – along with fellow business groups such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the British Retail Consortium – called for the government to not go ahead with the planned one per cent rise in employer’s national insurance contributions, set to take place from April 2011.

The recession may technically be over but that should act as no excuse for businesses not to keep a close eye on costs, one expert has pointed out.

Phil McCabe, spokesperson for the Forum of Private Business (FPB), notes that although rising optimism among companies and signs of economic growth is now being seen, “the worst certainly isn’t over”.

And with the next 12 months predicted to be “difficult”, firms looking to manage their business accounts may be interested to hear his advice that keeping a firm grip on costs will be “the best way to usher in recovery”.

“Make sure you don’t over-expand and keep the belt tightened over at least the next 12 months,” the FPB representative states.

Mr McCabe also suggests that the danger of a ‘double dip’ recession persists, something that could encourage entrepreneurs to ensure they have the best business bank accounts in place.

Such comments come as a recent study by the Federation of Small Businesses showed a fifth of small business owners have used a credit card to sustain their company in the past 12 months as a direct result of not receiving payments on time.
